In recent years, more and more artists who use folklore and ethnic motifs have been heard in this competition. How did it all begin? Folk motifs on the Ukrainian stage were used even before the s. In Soviet times, folk music also existed, but only in the form allowed by the Soviet authorities. Ethno was rethought in the s with the advent of the Ukrainian scene. It was combined with electronic and rock music. The Chervona Ruta Festival played a big role as a platform for such experiments. In , the Vopli Vidopliassova band released the folk-rock album Zakustika, in which they tried to remake Ukrainian folk songs. Thus they set the trend for other artists. Why is it trendy now?
Without a government supported export bureau to push bands internationally just one of the shortcomings of the State faced by artists, the acts there do get signed and big, but not in the numbers that ought to given the extraordinary talent. There are, however, some intrepid people in the country making an effort to strengthen the foundations of its scene.
